On Friday Nov. 25th 2005 at 1318 hrs. Box 22 was transmitted in the City of Keene and D-shift responded with 2 Engines & 2 Ladders to a reported house fire at 26 Fowler St. On arrival Capt. Chickering reported a working fire on the 2nd floor of a 3 story multi-family dwelling, and ordered a 1-3/4" line stretched in the front door to make the 2nd floor, as a quick primary search of the 1st floor found an elderly woman needing assitance in getting out of the building. A 2nd alarm was immediately struck adding 1 more Engine & the Heavy Rescue, along with several cover trucks reassigned to the city. After an initial attack on the 2nd floor, due to extreme heat and an imminent flashover a 3rd alarm was requested and the Companies working on the 2nd floor retreated to make an exterior knock down, along with ventilation of the 2nd a 3rd floors (which was a timely task due to limited access of Aerial Ladders) and initial manpower. After an exterior knock down was done, crews again made the 2nd floor and were able to make progress however the 3rd floor was now well involved at this time and due to poor access and the headstart the fire had, the fire gained the upperhand and once again crews were ordered out of the building by Deputy Boynton to set up an exterior attack which of course took hours. No one was injured, the cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Keene Fire Department Fire Investigation Bereau. For more photos see the photo gallery.
